Melanie
Hi, I'm Melanie.
I'm mum to a thirteen-year-old daughter whose journey has included hip dysplasia, Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS), and ADHD.
My daughter was diagnosed with hip dysplasia shortly after birth, which was a very emotional and uncertain time for our family. At the time, we had never heard of the condition and had no idea what the future might look like. Over the years she underwent several operations to try to correct the problem, and we later discovered that the difficulties in treating it were linked to her Ehlers-Danlos syndrome.
Living with EDS has brought ongoing challenges, including mobility issues with her hips and repeated shoulder subluxations. Alongside this, we have navigated life with ADHD and the impact these conditions can have on everyday family life.
As my daughter has grown into her teenage years, we've also experienced many of the challenges that come with adolescence, including friendships, social media, peer pressure, puberty, confidence, and independence.
Some of the experiences I'm happy to talk about include:
• Hip dysplasia
• Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS)
• ADHD
• Hospital appointments and operations
• Mobility challenges
• Raising a teenager with additional needs
• Family and relationship dynamics
• Social media, friendships and peer pressure
• The ups and downs of teenage life
Any conversation with me is based on my own personal experience — simply sharing what it has been like for me and my family.
Looking back, much of our journey has involved adapting to challenges we never expected to face. It's taught us that family life often takes unexpected turns, and that every stage brings new experiences to navigate together.
